It would be interesting to know how H.L. Jones operated this so called “stud farm,” given that artificial insemination was a much later development? How could “pedigree” be assured. Did he erect sex-domes like Gregor Mendel, or did he tether his Queens to silken threads like his American counterparts, or did have his own Australian method?

Hi, I lived in Redbank Plain as a child (1959-1965) and Mr Jones (not sure which one) had hives on our hobby farm. He was a kind man and knew that we played in his shed where he had extractors, equipment and his bees. My name is Lucienne and my mum was Mrs McLean. We had at least 50 mango trees so for sure the bees would have enjoyed the pollen. My memory of Mr Jones was quiet, friendly, gentle though I must admit we seldom ran into his company. I am a great-grandson of Harry Jones (his daughter Queenie was my grandma). I recently joined the Nepean Beekeepers Society with a view to establishing a hive or two at my home in the Lower Blue Mountains. It runs in the blood I guess! Many thanks for your painstaking research
